I think I took for granted how surrounded I was by animal lovers when I lived in Virginia. More specifically, how surrounded I was by fellow cat lovers. In Virginia, all of my close friends had pets. Most of them had cats or at least had an appreciation for the majesty that is the feline.
Not so much in Tennessee.
I think only one of my current coworkers has a cat — and she doesn’t really like her cat. She only has a cat because her mom gave her one of her two cats to stop the constant fighting between them. This coworker says she doesn’t even really like to pet the cat and would prefer to give it back.
This is so odd to me! Many of my coworkers frequently mention how I’m a cat lover and how they do not like cats. The tables have oddly turned and now I am the odd person out for being a cat lover. How do so many people dislike these little sweeties? Just look at this sweet kitty face*:
*This isn’t even a sweet kitty, but she has a sweet face!
So I thought it might be fun today to go over just what makes cats so damn great. There are a lot of reasons to love cats. Listed here are just a few of the endless, wonderful qualities this majestic species possesses.
1. Cats don’t give a f*ck
It’s true. Cats could truly not care less about most things. On the short list of things they do care about: food, birds outside (aka unobtainable food), sleeping, and bothering their humans when the humans are trying to sleep.
Nothing else is really of any importance to the cat. I can appreciate that.
2. Cute little faces
Once again, I must give you an example on just how adorable:
I mean, how can you not love such a cute face?
3. They make good snuggle buddies
Marnie is pretty much just a living, breathing hot water bottle. She loves to curl up beside me or even on me to sleep. Cats are the best cuddle buddies because they won’t cuddle with just anyone. You have to earn their love — which is something you don’t always have to do with dogs. It kind of depends on the dog, yes, but many dogs will blindly love anyone who shows them attention.
Cats are much more selective with their love, so you really feel special if you are chosen as a Cat Cuddle Buddy. It’s an honor, tbh.
4. They are fairly self sufficient
Most cats don’t need you constantly doting on them in order for them to be satisfied. In fact, many prefer that you leave them alone so they can peacefully nap in the sun.
Unlike dogs, cats take care of business on their own terms. As long as they are supplied with a regularly scooped litter box and food, they are pretty much good to go.
Cats are independent, but they still like your attention at times. It’s the perfect mix of having a fluffy pet and having a fluffy pet who isn’t constantly up your ass.
5. They provide endless entertainment
I guess you can say this about most pets, but cats are honestly funny creatures. Marnie will often find herself overcome with bursts of energy in which she darts around the room in what looks similar to a coked out haze.
She also regularly does the following hilarious things:
- Sticks her head under the bathroom sink to drink water and finds herself immediately drenched
- Sleeps on shoes (what is it about shoes?)
- Peers into the toilet as it’s flushing
- Walks around with fur hanging out of her mouth
There really is never a dull moment. Who wouldn’t want a silly little feline friend?
