If you’ve been reading my stuff for any length of time, you may be aware that I talk about getting older quite a bit. It’s honestly just something that I can’t wrap my head around. Sometimes I just kind of get lost in living life and suddenly realize something that doesn’t seem like it happened that long ago was actually 10 years ago. It’s insane. I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to it.
I still feel like the same person I was when I was 13, confused about everything, and faking my way through life. It seems like this big, cosmic joke that I’m actually An Adult™ who supports herself, lives alone, and has decision making power.
Despite not feeling any older, there are things in the world that remind me that I’m no longer a part of “kids these days.” Below are some things that remind me that I am, indeed, getting older.
First, I don’t have any idea who the following people are:
- Gigi Hadid
- Chrissy Teigen
- Shawn Mendes
- Blac Chyna
- Zayn (One Direction I think??)
- Lukas Graham
Second, some people are starting to call stuff that came out while I was alive “classic.” I don’t like that. If it came out in the ’90s, it is not classic. Yes, certain ’90s things were 25 years ago and I know that 25 years is often the time frame given to whether or not something can be considered “classic.” But I am 26 and I am still very much in my prime, so I take offense at this.
Next on the list is textspeak. I used to be pretty good at this. I know all about that LOL, ROFL, LMAO, OMG… but there is new stuff popping up all the time and my grandma self just can’t keep up with it. The other day, my 13-year-old niece said “HYD” to me and I wasn’t sure if it was a typo or some acronym of which I was not privy to the meaning. It turns out, she was saying “how ya doing” and I am very old.
And can we talk about the overuse of the “ok” emoji? Sometimes I frequent the Tumblr and I see this emoji used more than any other, including the eggplant and the poop emoji. Am I missing something or are kids these days really just enthusiastic about how ok they are doing? This has to be a double entendre, right? Yes? No?
Lastly, we are living in a world where people legitimately do not know who Paul McCartney is. Are we not teaching our children about the history of music or are they too glued to their iPads to listen?
Kids these days, man…. kids these days. I think I’m going to start a new acronym for that: KTD. Help me get this to catch on. #KTD
Also, I can only be so old since I lacked the maturity required to remember to turn off my oven last night. Whoops.
