I am quite obviously a part of society because I am required to go out into it and live. In general, I think I conform enough to not draw attention to myself on the streets. Despite that, there are some aspects of society that will forever boggle my mind. This post is about those things.
The first thing is tanning. I have never gone tanning and I never plan to. Even when I had a gym membership that included unlimited free tanning, I never did it. I am extremely pasty and white. If my family tree included Casper the Friendly Ghost, I would not be that surprised.
Perhaps part of my apprehension toward tanning is because I know I’ll burn within about 3 minutes. But the biggest thing is the whole I-don’t-want-skin-cancer thing. Sure, I’ve gotten some mean sunburns before by being out in the sun and neglecting to slather on enough of that good ol’ SPF. But I’m not going to go out of my way to do something that will increase my chances of skin cancer. Nope, not about that life.
Another thing about tanning that I don’t like is how damn expensive it is. A few of my coworkers were talking about going tanning and about how it cost them something like $12 per visit and that they could get 10 visits for like $100. My jaw nearly hit the ground. Yes, I would just love to pay out the proverbial wazoo for my skin cancer. The results just aren’t worth the potential price to me.
The second thing about society that I just don’t understand — and I’ve talked about this before — is why people still can’t shut up about the Kardashian/Jenner/West clan. I literally cannot get through a full day without hearing about at least one of them. And yes, I am using literally in the correct way in this instance.
I don’t care about Caitlyn Jenner and whether or not you refer to this person as “he” or “she” or “Bruce” or “Caitlyn.” I don’t care about Kylie’s lips or Kim’s nude selfies or whatever shit Kanye is spewing about Taylor Swift this week.
They are honestly just terrible, egotistical people that just happen to be beautiful and have tons of money. This is literally the only reason people are interested in them. My use of literally may not has been quite as correct this time, as I am sure there are some people who think that there’s actual talent somewhere. Does Kanye have talent? Probably, but his big head overshadows any inkling of it.
The last thing I’m going to rant about today is politics. I admittedly don’t keep up with politics enough to consider myself an “informed voter.” I kept up with it quite a bit during the 2008 election because it was my first time as a voter. But honestly? Politics depress me so much that I pretty much ignore it so I don’t give myself a panic attack about the state of the world.
Honestly, I think the internet has made presidential elections even more ridiculous than they already were. I am not a fan of any of our political options — especially the front runners — but I am not going to unfriend someone on Facebook because they are a Trump supporter. I’ve been seeing so much of this lately.
“If you support Trump, you are a racist.”
“If you support Hillary, you hate babies.”
Seriously? You are not making things better with making wild accusations. Our political options are really pathetic right now and you can’t blame someone for going with the candidate that they feel will be less likely to cause the country to implode. It bothers me that people can’t just be respectful of the beliefs of others. I may not agree with you and I might think you’re crazy, but I’m not going to write you off simply for supporting a political figure that I don’t like.
Unless you — you know — are a dick. And if you’re a dick, why was I your Facebook friend anyway? I just don’t get it.
What things about society make you scratch your head?
